Text Box: Recreation Notes and Reminders

Knox County Arc/ Sunshine Industries Closed Monday, the 20th, for President’s Day

February is National Therapeutic Recreation Month- The purpose of National Therapeutic Recreation Month is to enhance public awareness of therapeutic recreation programs, promote inclusive recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities, and to recognize the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) as the qualified provider of such services. According to National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, therapeutic recreation is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions based upon the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions. This process strives to improve quality of life, increase independence and focus on health promotion in order to facilitate full participation in life. February 8th marks the KCARC’s own commitment to such an effort when Leisure Services celebrates 24 years.

Special Olympics News

Special Olympics Unified Bowling- Leisure Services, in conjunction with Area 5 Special Olympics and Team Vols, has tentatively scheduled another six-week Unified Bowling League at UT. Competition is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 6th, at the University Center’s (UC) Down Under on the campus of the University of Tennessee. Bowling will take place on Tuesdays from 6-8 pm through either April 17th or 24th. The one exception will be on Tuesday, March 20th, which is spring break at UT. All bowlers must make a commitment to attend every scheduled Tuesday. Participants will have the option of either going with the group to eat dinner before competition each night or reporting to the bowling ally in the UC by 5:45. If you plan to eat dinner, you will need to turn in one payment of $60 which will cover six dinners. Important Note! Since this is Special Olympics, there is no fee to participate, but we still must come up with enough money to defray the program’s costs. Any donations to help defray some of this cost would be greatly appreciated. Cost to sponsor one bowler for all six weeks is approximately $24.00. Sign up ASAP! Space is limited!

Special Olympics Volleyball Practice and Tournament- Volleyball practice continues on Wednesdays through the month of February at Lincoln Park Baptist Church on Chickamauga Avenue. We leave Sunshine at 3:45 and return at 5:15. Actual practice times are 4-5. The local Special Olympics of Greater Knoxville (Area 5) Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, March 1st, at Oak Ridge High. Specific competition details will be distributed at a later date.
