Second Annual Citrus Sale
The second annual Citrus Sale benefitting Sunshine Leisure Services and The Arc Knox County will officially kick off Monday, October 31st and run through Friday, November 18th. Start lining up your perspective sales and be ready to go when the sale begins. In addition to grapefruit, oranges and tangelos, we are also looking at the possibility of adding NUTS to this year’s sale. Last year we raised over $5,000 with our first-ever sale which was done with little notice and lead time. Our goal this year is $10,000 but our success is dependent on everyone’s enthusiastic participation. This effort is vital to the continued success and existence of the Arc Knox County’s Leisure Services Program. Questions or inquiries for more information can be directed to Steve Causey, Leisure Services Director, at 546-9431 ext. 230.

Agency Spotlight: Beta Homes Retirement Program
The Beta Homes Retirement Program provides a slower-paced, structured day program with retirement-type activities for those older individuals who no longer want to be a part of the work force. The goal of the program is to help our seniors maintain physical stamina and flexibility, as well as mental acuity, using established techniques that are successful with the geriatric population and take into account our clients’ interests and limitations. It allows them to naturally “slow down” their pace of life and enjoy time off while remaining active in the community. There are many different activities that are available to our clients, including visits to the park, exercise at the O’Connor Center, lunch with their friends at Sunshine Industries, visits from a therapy dog and various other activities planned by the staff of the program. Jennifer Brown is the director of the program and she is assisted by Belinda Donald and Laura Morton, who supervise the program daily.
The program had a busy September! On September 2nd they hosted a Labor Day/Appreciation Picnic for family and friends of the program. We would like to thank Terrie Mahs and Sandy Webb for their food contribution to the picnic and to Belinda and Laura who worked very hard to prepare hot dogs, veggie burgers and grilled chicken, as well as chili, baked beans and chips. They worked off the picnic pounds by attending the O’Conner Center exercise class during the week and strolling the grounds of the Tennessee Valley Fair. |

Beta 3 Storm Damage Update
On Tuesday night, June 21st, storms rolled through Knoxville causing severe damage to many areas in Knoxville. Beta 3 was one of the casualties of this storm system when two large trees crashed into it, causing extensive damage. Luckily, all residents escaped without injury even though one tree crashed through the roof of a resident’s room. Central United Methodist Church opened up its doors and has provided lodging while repairs are completed. Repairs to the home are almost complete and the residents and staff are anxiously awaiting the grand reopening scheduled for the end of September. |
